The Gray Drake
Muskegon Tailwater Trout |
|

|
|
The resident brown and
rainbow trout fishing is
consistently evolving
into a spring creek
style fishery due to the
constant flow
management. With the
recent invasion of the
zebra mussels, which
purifies the water, the
clarity is impeccable.
In addition, heavy
aquatic vegetation is
adding significant
habitat for mayfly
nymphs and freshwater
shrimp. Very precise
presentation of tiny
flies and small tippets
add an increased
challenge to our
evolving fishery.
The
Muskegon hatches are
prolific with June being
the peak emergence of
the
massive Gray Drake and
other major hatches -"Streamer
stripping in the spring
can be very exciting
when the bigger browns
and rainbows are on the
hunt for Chinook Salmon
parr fry which are
available to the trout
by the thousands"

Starting in 2009, the
new cold water bottom
draw bubbler will begin
on Croton dam by
Consumers Power and the
Michigan DNR. This will
increase dissolved
oxygen and lower river
temperatures during the
extreme heat stress
periods. This will
greatly enhance the
trout fishery and will
hopefully increase
natural reproduction,
trophy size hold-over
rates and provide a more
consistent stream
habitat. More quality
regulations will also
improve the ability to
catch trophy sized trout
which the Muskegon has
already demonstrated it
has the capacity to do
so. This is very
exciting for the
catch-and release
angler.
